what usb modem works out of box on ubuntu 10.04

I have tried to use o2 usb modem e 160 to no avail and am now trying betavine vodaphone software but 10.04 states dependancies too large to install downloaded software. Is any usb modem suitable. Also what software would i need to use.
Beginner determined to succeed.
