10.4 install on ASUS K50IP laptop won't work

Asked by Mimenta

When I try to install 10.4 Ubuntu on my ASUS K50IP laptop it won't work.
Specs:
Notebook: Asus K50IP (K50 Series)
Processor: Intel Pentium Dual Core T4400
Graphics Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce 310M
Display: 15.6 inch, 16:9, 1366x768 pixels, glossy: yes

The screen comes up in coloured bands.
It seems the screen setting is incompatible or the Nvidia drivers won't work with Ubuntu.

Oddly Mint 8 "Helena" (which is based on Ubuntu) will load and run but appears stretched until I activate Nvidia drivers and reset the screen
size, then runs perfectly (but it doesn't have the multiple desktops that Ubuntu does - damn!)

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you burn the CD as slowly as you could?
Did you check the CD for defects?

Yes to all - and same CD was used to put Ubuntu on a desktop with 23 inch wide screen and it works fine.

Ubuntu ISO came from APC magazine, not off the Internet so less risk of corruption in ISO file (I've been caught before!).

Have tried with SuSe too and same result - on boot screen is coloured lines - seems only Mint works but although I can reset the screen resolutions, it reports a parse error when I try to update them to the init file. So I have to reset resolutions again with each new start up.
