Apple Mighty Mouse occassionally stops working

Asked by Matt Davies

It isn't consistent, but sometimes the USB Mighty Mouse is recognized and all is well. However, many times, it isn't recognized and there isn't anything I can try to force it back to life. Unplugging the mouse and replugging it back in has no effect. Even a hard reboot doesn't appear to clear it up all the time. The touchpad on the laptop works consistently.

Why hard reboot if you can use te touchpad to reboot gracefully!? Hard reboots are not good for your system and can physically damage hardware.

When the device ceases to work open a terminal and run:

dmesg | tail

Paste the output here as an update.

Thanks

Seems to starts happening when I leave the computer sit for about 10 minutes. It doesn't suspend or hibernate when the mouse stops working.

Reboot didn't clear up the issue.

After a while, I noticed that the system seemed to paused then the mouse came back.

Output of demsg when mouse is connected and working:

Anyone have any ideas on what may be causing this or how I can work around it? As it is now, Ubuntu is not very usable for me and I may just give up on it. (No, the touch pad is not a good work around)

Thanks for your help on this. I have been able to determine the root of the problem. The intermittent issues were caused by a mouse that was dying. Finally, the mouse lost its battle and stopped working no matter which OS I had hooked it up to.

Now, if the wireless support in Ubuntu had not carped out (again) I wouldn't have made the switch to openSUSE -- which seems to be a more stable distribution on my HP notebook. Ubuntu still lives on some of my desktops, so I'm not completely abandoning it.

If you are going to ask for more information and appear to be helpful, it would be a good idea to follow up.
