Upgrade Hoary to Gutsy

Asked by Yordan Yordanov

How to upgrade my Hoary to Gutsy Desktop ? Is there a safe way to do that using Internet connection?
I am interested about apt configuration file `sources.list'. What should I write in this file to get Gutsy easy, without complications.

Unfortunately, I have broken packages. How to fix that ? I 've already tried `apt-get -f install ', but it causes a removal of many packages.

Thank you in advance for your help.

there is no safe way to upgrade from hoary to gutsy, gutsy is still in beta (it can and will unexpectedly break) and hoary is very very old.

it is reccomended that you download a live cd from www.ubuntu.com. burn that to a disk and install the feisty fawn release from there.
if you are adamant about installing gutsy you can get a live-cd image from here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/gutsy/tribe-5/

Only upgrades between a release and the next one are supported, so you would need to upgrade hoary -> breezy -> dapper -> edgy -> feisty and then from there to gutsy (which is still in development).

Considering the amount of upgrades needed, it should be probably easier to backup your data and install from fresh.
