Asked by jrmoose

I just downloaded the newest version of ubuntu. I would like to create a persistence install. I would like the usb thumb drive to remember all the programs and settings I have on the disc after I restart every time. I'm not looking for a live install. Can someone please help? Please make the instructions user friendly........

It sounds like what you are looking for is a full install to USB, mimicking an install to an internal drive, rather than a persistent USB.

Burn your ISO to a CD and boot from it. Once 10.04 has booted, insert a USB stick of at least 4GB, capacity preferably more. (Use a USB device that as as fast as you can afford.)

Select the "Install Ubuntu" option. You will be installing Ubuntu to your USB drive using the "Advanced" method.

The key points to note during installation is to specify your partitions manually, and the GRUB location manually. Normally you will install Ubuntu using the "Entire Disk" method onto / on sdc1, and installing the GRUB (bootloader) to sdc (but again check the size/description of your disks that the installer reports to ensure that this is your case. Installing to the wrong disk will destroy any existing systems.)

If all goes well the installer will report that it is copying files to your USB device and then will prompt you to restart. When you do so, make sure the CD is ejected, and hold the "ESC' key when you see your BIOS message(s). You should be prompted to select the drive to boot from. One of the options will (hopefully) be your USB drive.
