Problems displaying XWindows under Ubuntu

Asked by rg32001

Hi,

I just installed Ubuntu 6.06 for the first time, and am having problems getting my password screen to display. At the moment, Ubuntu appears to load successfully, but when the screen clears to take me to the GUI so I can log in and start using it, the log in screen will not display. I also have no response from the keyboard.

Coming from a Windows background (and only rarely having used Linux before), I'm at a loss. I tried doing what would be under Windows a "Safe-Mode" boot and am able to access the command prompt. Pipig the results of the boot to a text file (withs ome help from a book) and reviewing in VI editor didn't really give me any hints.

I'm suspecting a graphic card issue (being as it's the GUI it's failing to display), but would this affect the display of the command line?

If anybody has any ideas of what could be causing this issue, it would be appreciated. Bare in mind that I'm a newbie to all this in any replies. :o>

The system is a 64bit AMD Athlon 8000 processor with 2Gb RAM. It runs Windows Vista on its primary 200Gb hard drive, and is trying to run Ubuntu Linux on its second 200Gb hard drive.

The problem occurred after the Ubuntu OEM installation finished, and the computer was re-booted to log in for the first time.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. If you need more info, let me know.

Many thanks,

Rob. :o>

You can try to change the xorg.conf manually. To do this you have to login in text mode.

Try this:

Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go to text mode.

Login with your username and password.

sudo pico /etc/X11/xorg.conf

search for Section "Device" and change the Driver to vesa

like this:

Driver "vesa"

then press Ctrl+X.
type y and enter twice

then try to restart X with startx command

Hi again,

The graphics card is an Nvidia GeForce 7600GT 256Mb (there are two of these running together).

Sachetto, I will try your suggestions today and see if they work. (Fingers crossed!)

Many thanks,

Rob.

Why don't you try to use the development version of Ubuntu (Gusty - 7.10). It has bulletproofX and maybe it will help you to configure your video card.

Can you help with this problem?
