xubuntu 6.06 on g3 233 powerbook

Asked by alaoui

hello

I have downloaded both xubuntu desktop and alternate disk image on to m y ibook g4 (osx10.4), burned them using disk utility,

and put them in my old powerbook -a wallstreet or a mainstreet?-

pressed "c" but the image of a floppy disk with a question mark keeps coming up. I thought the alternate version would be recognizeable by my g3pb, but it is not.

most of the write-ups for installation of xubuntu or ubuntu on ppc g3s -or any computer- say there's a GUI installer; just download, burn, throw in the CD and let the installer do its business...

but what if my computer doesn't recognize the installer? os9 doesn't read "yaboot." should I prep os9 with "bootX"?

yes I have read a little, and I'm forming a composite plan in my mind, but I am writing the professionals -you all- to

a: confirm I'm on the right track, and
b: to request perhaps a composite page,

where someone might look up the make and model of their old computer and then find all the necessary boot instructions included...

I guess that roaming the forums is an integral part of "informed" computing these days.

thank you for your time, patience and attention.

I await your response.

You can't install Ubuntu from INSIDE MacOS, you leave the disc in and reboot the machine and install should start off the CD. Make sure you've downloaded the PowerPC (PPC) version of Ubuntu aswell.

Sorry if I was unclear: I restarted from the CD. I did not start from INSIDE macOS. Î left the disk in. I rebooted. I got the floppy disk icon with a question mark over it.

Something in my mac is not reading the installer. I assumed it was the current OS. I'm sorry if mentioning the current OS threw you off.

also: I am trying Xubuntu for lack of ram.

I had a problem with my iMac's CD drive being broken, so I worked out the changes to get Xubuntu booting from a harddisk image.

Once boot was going, it pulled the rest of the install off a 3rd party USB CD drive. Email me if you want more details.
Simon.

Can you help with this problem?
