Freezing mouse and keyboard on desktop

I have Ubuntu 10.04 and it did a partial update and now when i boot up to the desktop my mouse and keyboard don't work.

Have tried:
- adding "nomodeset" to the end of the linux line.
- nosmp acpi=off

Please Help

So do you have maverick now? "partial update" implies this but an update should keep you on the same release but with newer packages.

Please clarify

No, I still have Lucid Lynx 10.04 It was just some updates, which only installed partially which then asked for the partil update to be completed but this is when my problem started. now when i boot up to my desk top everything looks fine but the keyboard and mouse no longer work.
