After recent partial update on 10.10, PC comes up in single user mode, not GUI.

Asked by Bill Leonard

Apologies if this is a duplicate.

Loaded 10.10 beta ten days ago. All was well. Loaded up a few add-ons and all was still well. Took a set of updates on Sunday or Monday Sept 5/6 via a partial upgrade. All was well. Turned off the box for the week.

Turned back on Friday Sept 10 and took another set of updates via another partial upgrade. Box came up in single user mode rather than GUI. Played around for a while trying to fix but no-go. Reloaded the box using the same 10.10 beta live CD. All was well. Restarted a few times. All still well.

Took the recommended partial upgrade and I was back in single user mode after the required restart. Bummer, eh?

Reloaded from the same Live CD and all is back to being well again.

Any insights wrt what patch that came out during the week of Sept 6th might have dinged me? Offhand, I'll stay away from upgrading until next weekend in the hopes that whatever is hosing me right now gets fixed.

Dell Dimension PC with a Pentium 4 processor. 2gig of ram, 80gb internal hd, 250gb external drive. Not running Windows -- this is strictly a non-production Ubuntu box hanging off of a home wireless lan.

Odd stuff.

Thanks.

Partial upgrades are not advised and you should have resolved the issue then done a full upgrade

I appreciate the feedback on partial rather than full. When I selected System -> Administration -> Update Manager it does tell me that "not all updates can be installed" and says "run a partial upgrade to install as many upgrades as possible." Mind you, I thought, perhaps wrongly, that I'd follow their directions since I'm on a beta load.

This next time I'll ignore the recommendation from Ubuntu and see if the results are any different. I'll also report back on the results.

Please press ctrl+alt+f2 and made login with your user and password, then type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

sudo reboot

Hope this helps

Marco,

Thanks for the cmd set. I have a lot of UNIX background but am still learning Linux and Ubuntu.

I ran the update and dist-upgrade to bring 10.10 up to date. As necessary, I'll do that until 10.10 goes official in October and will avoid the partial upgrade via the system update gui.

Thanks again.
