limited memory

Asked by za_goenk

I have limited memory on my computer, there's less than 256mb of memory remaining on my laptop (8mb used by graphics adapter). Is there any way to install ubuntu in my laptop without running the live cd (just install not running live ubuntu)?
Thanks for your attention.

Sincerely yours

Agung Syarifudin

of course :)
you need to download and burn the 'alternate cd' which contains a text based installer, you can get this by checking the option at the bottom of the download selection page on ubuntu.com. you may have problems running ubuntu on less than 256mb ram though so it might be reccomended to instead use xubuntu, you will have all the programs you have access to in ubuntu but its designed for lower ram systems. http://www.xubuntu.org/

If Xubuntu is still too heavy, you may also try Puppy Linux (www.puppylinux.org) which should handle well <256MB. Puppy Linux is not based on Ubuntu.

You have an option to use the Ubuntu Alternate Install CD. On this page - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download - there is an option that says
"Check here if you need the alternate desktop CD. This CD does not include the Live CD, instead it uses a text-based installer." check that, and then click on download. You will have a CD with text installer, but the resulting install will be exactly the same as if done using the Live CD. Here is a direct link to the alternate CD iso for a 32bit system -- http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.04/ubuntu-7.04-alternate-i386.iso

Hope that helps ..
