Ubuntu download problem

Asked by Eric Snoeberger

I'm trying to download Ubuntu. Windows XP has it downloading in "temporary folder" with no option to change this. It seems to fully download successfully but when I try to download the Universal USB installer and get to the point where I'm to "browse" for the file, I can't find said "temporary folder". The screenshot on the installer shows it coming up in the Desktop, but nope. I've tried a search using 'ubuntu' as the key and nothing. Please excuse my ignorance, but what am I doing wrong? I'm attempting to get a bootable UDB drive so as to do a clean install on a new computer I'm building. I am, btw, totally unfamiliar with Ubuntu or any other Linix system & intend to use this computer to learn & see if I can make it do what I need. Thank you.

Use the torrent:

32bit:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/ubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-i386.iso.torrent
MD5: 9a95ed6f6ec38fb58c446dba1add6a08

64bit
http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/ubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso.torrent
MD5: b4faa186c2419dc26e522e5f82e268a1

It will also give extra error testing on the data but you should also MD5 test. You will need a client like bitlord to download using this method (any torrent client will do really)

You can then use:
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/downloads/Universal-USB-Installer/Universal-USB-Installer-1.7.9.5.exe
or
http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/unetbootin-windows-latest.exe

To transfer the file to the USB properly. Just because some guide shows the ISO file on the desktop doesn't mean anything at all. You can download wherever you want as long as you can locate the data, ANY directory is fine.

Right-click this link, and choose Save As from the context menu. That should enable you to choose where the file is saved.

Thank you Marc, it still took some head scratching & a medium size hammer, but I now have a USB drive that says it has what I need on it.

Thank you again.
