We want qimo for kids desktop for one user only

Asked by Miranda Culbertson

Hi again,

We just downloaded qimo for kids desktop (thanks for the prior tip) but before I install it I wanted to ask: Do you know how I can make sure it will only change the desktop for the one user? I set-up my son as another user but in the login it reads his name as part of the "family desktop". Is there a way to have the desktops separate? Or will the installation of qimo affect all users?

Thanks again!

When installing from the CD you usually end up replacing your current OS, or adding Qimo alongside it. If you're using Ubuntu and just want to add a Qimo session for one (or more) user, then there's a better way.

Open a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and type:
sudo apt-get install qimo-session

Then when you log in, after selecting your username, but before you type your password, look at the bottom panel for "Session". This determines the type of desktop session you'll use. Choose Qimo session when logging into your son's account, GNOME for your own. You should only need to change the session type once—it'll be remembered for future logins of each user.
