Java will not work in Lucid Lynx

Asked by Audrey Spence

Hi! I cannot install or get Java to run correctly when I am attempting to install it from the Firefox add-ons. I receive this error message:

"The Java Console extension is no longer supported and will be automatically removed the next time you restart Firefox. This will not affect any Java applications or websites in any way".

It then prompts me to restart my browser to delete the add-on.
What am I doing wrong? Do I need to use another version?

Thanks,
Audrey

Open System → Administration → Software sources → [ Other software ]
enable "http://archive.canonical.com/lucid partner"
Close and confirm the repository reload.

Then open a Terminal from the menu Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-bin

your user password when requested

and you can read the Ubuntu Manual: http://ubuntu-manual.org/

Thanks. It appears to be installed, and enabled, but yet I am still unable to chat on the website on which I am trying to use it. Is this site-specific, possibly? Is there a site where I can check to see if it is indeed working correctly?

of course there is a site
www.java.com
under the red button that says "Free Java Download"
you can see a link that says "Do I have Java?" click it
and you will see a red button says " Verify Java Version"
click it
and it will take less than a min and give you the result
