Wireless Lan and Lan worked, but connection fails with specific chinese network and Ubuntu

Asked by Stefan Hammer

I have an Thinkpad X200 with an Intel 5100 AGN Wlan card and a 82567LM Gigabit Network card.
Everything worked fine out of the box with Ubuntu 10.04 with several networks (home, university,...) in Austria.
Now I am at a Chinese University and cannot connect to wlan or lan there.
It is a open (non secured) wifi and it works fine with Windows (Laptops from all the others) and also with my Android device, but not with Ubuntu. Network-Manager tries to connect and is already obtaining an IP address (weave in icon just goes up), when the connection breaks and telling "Connection failed". It worked only once in 4 days and there only for some minutes. Also wired Lan tries to connect and then breaks apart.

I have collected as many information from my device, system and from the network. I also add all the logs. If there is some information missing, please tell me.

It would be really great if you could help me, I urgently need Internet on my Laptop for studying.
Thanks a lot!

Don't different countries use different frequencies? You can also try wicd if network-manager doesnt fit the bill. If yuo use 3G then stick with network-manager.

Thanks for your answer.
The wifi they provide is on channel 6, this one exists with the same frequency also in Europe. My Android Device also connects without problems and all the other Laptops from other foreign students, so this is most likely no problem.
I also tried to connect just with the terminal, and this didn't work ether, so I am quite sure, that the network manager is not the problem. But i will try wicd!

I'm also not sure, if it is the wlan anyway, because wired lan also doesn't work. And the log tells me, that wifi already connected and then drops the connection again because of local choice.
Maybe it is a problem with the DHCP server?

Okay! I solved it after 3 days of troubleshooting.
It seems like the DHCP server can't handle Ubuntu, or they just do not understand each other that well. I never got an IP address. That was also the reason for disconnecting by local choice again. Now I entered an IP address, the netmask, the gateway and the DNS server manually and it works just fine. Connection established!
Maybe this is a bug?!
Thanks a lot for your help!
jango and isa!
