No address associated with hostname

Asked by prashant pandey

I have installed lucid on my laptop. Now when I update it from my mobile broadband connection then it updates easily.
But the problem is when i update it from my college network. My college network is a wired network.
It gives:
SystemError: Failed to fetch http://in.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/b/b43-fwcutter/b43-fwcutter_012-1build1_i386.deb Something wicked happened resolving 'in.archive.ubuntu.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname)

I have checked my hosts file:

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 prashant-laptop

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 localhost ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

Can anyone please help me..

Is your computer able to resolve in.archive.ubuntu.com when you are on the college network? This can be tested with dig or nslookup, or even ping (it should give 111.91.91.37). If other addresses are working, it is possible your school's DNS server is malfunctioning. This could be tested by using another DNS server temporarily, such as 8.8.8.8 which belongs to Google - if it works then, it is the school's DNS server which is having the problem.

If the system is able to resolve the server, can you please paste the output of your /etc/apt/sources.list file?

I suggest you switch your softare source to a different one using System -> Admin -> Software Sources.

Manually CHOOSE one, Don't use the best server button.

May help
