one email causes evolution to stop responding

Asked by Gary Jphnson

Evolution retrieves email from server with no problem. One email from a trusted friend appears to have large graphic files attached. When that email is selected, the program ceases to respond and I must force quit. I have removed and installed Evolution. One time, the program previewed a different email first, and I was able to access everything until I got to the problem email, and then the program quit responding.

I would like to remove the problem email from my computer, but I am new to Ubuntu, Linux and still not comfortable with the file system. I would like to be able to remove the problem file from my system through the file system, which I believe would solve the problem.

I checked the Evolution web site, and it appears that this isn't a unique problem, but I couldn't find out how they solved the problem, and I have gotten no update that cure the problem. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Where does Evolution store incoming email initially? That is before I delete or move to another folder. I have used default settings on all setups.

You can disable previewing temporarily (View/Preview/, then untick Preview messages) so that when you locate this e-mail you can delete it without having it previewed.
Once the e-mail is marked as deleted (there is a line crossing it out), you can expunge the specific folder (actually remove all the e-mails that have been marked as deleted). To do this, click Folder/Expunge.

It is good to report these issues to the GNOME Bugzilla, and if possible to provide information for the developers to reproduce this issue.

Your solution seems reasonable, however, Evolution has set itself on the problem email, and is still trying to preview it. The program retrieves email from the server without a hitch, however, it stays on "fetching email" and I cannot change my options to stop preview and have to force quit just to get back to the desktop.

What you can do is change the setting not to preview, without using evolution.

Start gconf-editor from the command line, then go to the key

/apps/evolution/mail/display/show_preview and untick it.

Hope this helps.
