every time i restart ubuntu 10.10 the sound is muted.

 i have reset the sound preference several times and it still mutes

Log a bug. Maverick is still in beta and will be in a fairly similar state on release date. You could add a startup item to tell the alsa mixer to unmute at startup but a bug needs creating to get it resolved gracefully
