Can I upgrade to Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 without deleting data: YES

Suggest you back up my data to an external hard drive or usb drive before
you begin.

Is this machine running Ubuntu 9.04 and nothing else?

Do try and pare down you system getting rid of any PPA or stuff which
didn't come from the main ubuntu repositories.

Do choose this upgrade path 9.04 -> 9.10 -> 10.04
It seems like a lot of work but my experience is that skipping
a release can cause you more work in the long run.

Do test 9.10 works okay and open a few programs whatever
before you make the final move to 10.04.

Here is an upgrade tutorial for the last hop:
   http://www.howtoforge.com/how-to-upgrade-ubuntu-9.10-karmic-koala-to-10.04-lucid-lynx-desktop-and-server

It is worth knowing a little about your hardware before you begin,
certainly worth knowing the make and model of your graphics card?

When all is done and working well, you will I am sure be please with Ubuntu Lucid
and the new features it offers.

No, running 9.04 and some other old version but can't access that profile.
