My new Canon printer seems toi be incompatable with Ubuntu, how do I introduce it?

Asked by Dorothy Lott

I have been using a Canon PIXMA printer for some years, I have now bought a new one, but it seems to be incompatible with Ubuntu. I have inserted the "start up " disc, but there is no response, despite clicking on the icon.

Canon support is pretty poor in Linux. What model is the printer? You have forgotten a very important piece of information...

If your system is 32bit you DON'T need to use any force just instal them as normal in the order shown in the guide.

 Is PIXMA MP270 not the model number? If not, where do I find it?

I am unable to follow the guide as it comes on a disc which I am unable to download, despite inserting it and clicking on the icon. Also, I have no idea whether the printer is a "32 bit" as mentioned in your reply. Where do I find that information. It is not in the booklets provided!

You dont need the disk, the files are online. There is no such thing as a 32bit printer. The bitness is of the OS you installed. If you run:

uname -m

you willl see i686 (meaning 32bit) or x86_64 (meaning a 64bit OS)

The files you need are all online and that guide shows how to install them as wel as get the scanner working.

This code will get the scanner working AFTER you get the printer installed:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:robert-ancell/simple-scan && apt-get update; apt-get upgrade

You can get the driver with:

cd ~; wget http://files.canon-europe.com/files/soft37268/software/MP270_debian_driver_pack.tar; tar -xvf MP270_debian_driver_pack.tar; cd MP270_debian_driver_pack; tar zxvf ./tar -xvf ./cnijfilter-mp270series-3.20-1-i386-deb.tar; cd cnijfilter-mp270series-3.20-1-i386-deb; cd packages; sudo dpkg -i ./cnijfilter-common_3.20-1_i386.deb; sudo dpkg -i ./cnijfilter-mp270series_3.20-1_i386.deb

Should do it, basically the archive downloaded has the debs you need. The CD is of NO value to you as it only has windows driver
