Monitor enters sleep mode on startup

Asked by Sam H

So I had this old computer that I screwed up with a virus a long time ago. I eventually dug it out and re-installed XP on it because I figured I'd just use it for internet browsing and stuff. Well the XP for some reason wouldn't access the internet, so I decided to put Ubuntu Linux on it. I burned it on to a disc, and brought it over, and started the process. The purple Ubuntu screen popped up for about 30 seconds, then the monitor (some old SVA thing) gave me an error message that said
"Unknown Mode
H: 75.2Khz V: 75.0HZ"
then it went to sleep. I brought over a different monitor, installed Linux, did all the janks and it worked fine.

So my question is, why won't the original monitor work? It worked fine when I had XP on it earlier.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You may need an xorg.conf file to set a different refesh rate which your monitor will perform. Udev does an ok job at detecting stuff but if your monitor doesn't respond to probing then the system will set a refresh rate. This is obviously not suitable for your hardware so you must use an xorg.conf file to tell the system what to use.

Can you give the output of:

sudo lshw -C display

and I can formulate one which may work

Can you help with this problem?
