4+ hours spent on 7.04 New install, died on step 6 of 7

Help - I'm completely new to Ubuntu.

I'm attempting to install 7.04 on a new drive - This is a completely fresh install on a brand new blank hard drive.I did the memory test found on the CD and passed every time.

It stops responding at a different step every time I attempt to install. The furthest I've progressed is to step 6 where it asks for your username. It died just when I could see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Should I buy a MAC?, please convince me otherwise!
