Screen dims on battery

Asked by Marco Parillo

I see an answer to 'Brightness sliders do not appear in power manager using 8.04' at:
https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/30670
I have a similar problem with my Dell using the Live CD with 10.04, but the solution there does not work (probably because a Dell laptop does not have a /sys/devices/platform/dell_laptop directory like the Asus in the resolved question (/sys/devices/platform/asus_laptop/ls_switch)).

The Battery Tab in my Power Management Preferences Menu does not have a slider for screen brightness, and when I <Fn> <up arrow> to manually increase the screen brightness, it promptly dims again very quickly. If the battery is at half-charge, maybe in 30 seconds or less.

What I would like is some way of indicating that I do not mind running the battery down, but instead would prefer to have an experience similar to that when I plug in my Latitude D630.

Many thanks in advance.

That just seems like you've got the "Dim display when idle" option set in the power management preferences. Open them by going to:
System > Preferences > Power Management
then click on the "On Battery Power" tab. The "Dim display when idle" checkbox is at the bottom. Untick it to keep the brightness consistent.
