Video and audio card

I've a realtek sound card and a ATI radeon xpress 1100 video card.
The first one doesn't work at all, and the second one doesn't allow me to enable the desktop effect setting

ati's binary drivers do not support desktop effects, its reccomended that you contact ati and ask them to support this feature. (as they do not let anyone see the source to their drivers the ubuntu developers can not do anything about this).
