X server not configured properly with nvidia drivers

Asked by Drake1234

Hi i have tried many times to get these damn desktop effects to work lol and every time I install them the restart X with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace it says your X Server is not configured properly i say ok then after a while of would you like to see this and that it comes up with a terminal like sessionso i exit out of that, pop in the Ubuntu 7.04 CD and restore the original xorg.conf and it seems to be fine but i can't enable these neet effects that i have seen so many people play with on YouTube and they say it is easy to get them enabled but it isn't for me i downloaded the file nvidia-glx-legacy from packages.ubuntu.com and set it up and it doesn't work. The card i use is an nvidia GeForce 2 series and i have to recover the xorg.conf to the one that i backed up to get the X Server to work. So what can i do to get ubuntu to be able to work with my GeForce 2 card and be able to show desktop effects?
Thanks if anyone can help!

Are you sure you're installing and properly configuring
nvidia-glx-legacy? That's a veeeeery old card. I'm not sure if it will
even properly support compiz.

you are using the open source nv driver instead of the nvidia binary driver. the open source driver only supports 2d opporations, desktop effects needs 3d.

you can either remove the nvidia drivers via synaptic and re-install them (ubuntu should automatically update your xorg.conf to use the binary drivers),
or run "sudo nvidia-xconfig" which should also update your xorg.conf to use the binary drivers
or change the following in xorg.conf:
Section "Device"
 Identifier "nVidia Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400]"
 Driver "nv"
 BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

to:
Section "Device"
 Identifier "nVidia Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400]"
 Driver "nvidia"
 BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

ok i will surely try that and let you know if that works with the bottom one cause that looks like the easiest to me with the gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change that line so it says nvidia instead of nv. i do not have internet access on this computer right now but i will try to see if it works a little later becuase i am not near my computer right now. so i will let you know

Ok i changed the thing to say nvidia instead of nv and it comes up with nVidia when i start it but it says that desktop effects can not be be enabled
is this because of my old graphics card (GeForce 2) or is there another issue? Please let me know. From:Drake Lovett

hrmm, im not sure weather a graphics gpu as old as that can actually support desktop effects try adding these two options to the "Device" section in xorg.conf
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
Option "DisableGLXRootClipping" "True"

also make sure that running the command "glxinfo | grep direct" returns a yes
you should also make sure that the command "glxinfo | grep texture_from_pixmap" returns *something* as thats a feature of the graphics card that desktop effects needs.

if you get a no to the first command then i would reccomend running
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

ubuntu will then regenerate your xorg.conf. you might need to change nv to nvidia again though.

hope that helps.

I looked at the commands and they both rendered a no like GLX Missing on device 0:0 i rewrote the xorg file and it still says that for both things. From:Drake Lovett

Unfortunately the legacy drivers to not support Aiglx that I'm aware of,
this means you will not easily get Compiz or similar working. And if you
do, using XGL, as the ATI users still have to, the results will be poor
at best on your hardware. You can however look in to a guide for running
XGL with a nVidia, though it involves a bit of scripting work which may
or may not be over your head. You can decide that on your own.

Oh dear that is allot of scripting to do and i am very new to Ubuntu so i will get a newer graphics card with the newer drivers like nvidia-glx rather than nvidia-glx-legacy since i want to experience a good compiz experience not all jitters and stuff like that and crashes everytime you enable 9 pluggins or something i dont know. so i will probably do that then and get my computer guy to install it for me cause i wouldn't have the slightest idea i would probably get the kernel panic and the Blue screen when i swith the OSes on lol.
