a few issues with 10.04

Asked by mr lee

I upgraded to 10.04 a few days ago. I no longer have the ability to minimize a window, or re-size windows, and most importantly, "help" does not work. When I click on it, it starts (I can see the the pane in the status bar) but then it just goes away. Is anyone else having similar issues, and are there fixes for them?

What happens when you minimize apps?

I cannot minimize any window...because of the new changes, the windows for certain apps (specifically Frostwire and Banshee) allow you to "close"(minimize) or "quit", but if I pull up my internet connection, I can't minimize THAT. I can either stay online, or quit. This is problematic as I listen to radio online, so if I quit, I lose the station. I used to be able to minimize that window, and work on other things, but I no longer have that option. Also, I can no longer change the size of any screens I happen to be working in.

So the top bar (the window decorator) is missing?

yes, the top bar which USED to contain the min, max and "X" is no longer there.

ok then press ALT+F2
type: metacity --replace
Press ENTER

Should bring them back. You can then work on the system to get the window decorators back. The above steps will remove desktop effects but you can switch them on with:

compiz --replace

In the same method, you will need to switch back and forth until you get the system right.

READ the words I wrote and follow. Its very clear and very step by step. Don't get scared just because I haven't written "Click this click that".

Read!

I became frustrated with too many uncooperative windows...I shut down and rebooted the system...when it came back, I had my 'decorator' bars! (it's possible, i guess, after the upgrade, the system maybe did not restart or boot up properly)...in any event, thank you for your assistance. Will mark this 'solved'...
