How to install MS-Office on Ubuntu?

Asked by RdeLain

I'm new to Ubuntu, Linux. Windows PRO but I'd love to switch to Ubuntu. I need to know how:
1.) After downloading packages from the web, how do I install them on Ubuntu?
2.) If I want to install Microsoft Office on Ubuntu, how do I do that?
3.) Like in windows, how do I make the mouse stick to a window when dragging?
4.) Is there a plug-in of add-on I need to have Ubuntu's windows flip like a mac or vista? Like Aero?
5.) I have a DELL Inspiron 9200 I dual boot with Win XP and need drivers for my wireless card, where can I get them.

Please I'll appreciate all the help I could get.

thanks.

1) You shouldn't have to download packages from the web, most anything
you need will be in the universe repository (plenty of info on the
forums and the wiki on enabling extra repositories, but simplified
instruction follows:) Just start up Synaptic Package Manager System >>
Administration >> Synaptic, then enter your password as asked to start
it. Now go to Settings >> Repositories and check all that you want on
that first tab there, close that and click the reload button. Now you
can search for any packages you might want, and most things should be in
there. We have a Huuuuuge Universe repository. Now things that you do
happen to download in Debian format (name.deb) youcan simply double
click and oyu get a nice wizard of sorts, not the next next next accept
next finish type of wizard, but you simply double click, click the
install button, enter your password, and it flies.

2) Short answer, you don't You might look in to Crossover Office for
some usage of various Office tools and versions, but Open Office should
get the job done in most cases.

3) I'm not sure what you mean entirely... but try alt-left click for
dragging.

4) Compiz or Beryl, plenty of documentation on the forums, you'll most
likely need to get some restricted drivers for your video card for that,
if you have an ATi this won't be as trivial as using nvidias drivers.

5) That depends on the specific card, I won't lie wireless support
pretty much is a pain all around on linux right now. try googling around
for information on your specific hardware. Like search specifically for
Linux, YourChipset/Model

6) My mistake... there wasn't a 6, Oh well I'm an over achiever!

Enjoy, and if you have any trouble not listed make sure to open a new
ticket so it's properly addressed. Thanks for trying Ubuntu!

If the installer didn't auto set up your wireless then you probably have one of the infamous broadcom cards. The link below will give you an idea about whether your card will work or not and how to get it to work. You can save yourself a lot of grief by picking up one of the intel wireless mini pc cards and replacing the broadcom. You might also try and convince dell that it's broken and see if they will replace it with an intel card. If you do have intel and it's not working it should be easy to get set up. I believe (not on ubuntu at the moment to check) you can find out which card by typing

lspci

in a terminal window and then looking for something about wireless.

Jim,

Thanks for replying to my questions and help. Indeed I have that infamous Broadcom card in my laptop. Though I haven’t gotten the time to do the research you suggested, once I do, I’ll let you know of the results. Until then, I’ll keep playing with Ubuntu cause it’s looking pretty good.

Thanks all of you guys for getting back to me. It's very encouraging to see all the interest in this software. I've been using and is a MFT certified in almost all levels for the last 17 years and never have that kind of support. I used UNIX in the past but did not like it and unfortunately revert back to to MFT. Only three weeks in Ubunut and I'm very excited about it.

Bryan, since I do have all the Ubuntu DVDs, I'll play around to find what I need.

Once again, thanks to all for your support. I'll come back again if I do have more questions.
