How do I go back to open source graphics drivers please?

Asked by athur1950

Hello,
I installed the NVidia graphics driver on to my Ubuntu 10.04.1 system and it runs very well. Just for the sake of it however, I now wish to go back to the open source one. How do I do this please? If I go - system - administration - hardware drivers, the Nvidia drivers are the only ones listed.

Thanks greg, but that hasn't worked. All that has done is disable the visual effects. If I then go to - system - administration - hardware drivers, the window tells me that I am still using the current Nvidia accelerated graphics driver.

Hi Athur

Under System>Administration>Hardware Drivers,

1) Select the driver that you are currently using. There should be 3 choices (ver. 173, ver. 96, and current). You can selected all three and follow the steps below.

2) Click REMOVE and it will uninstall that driver.

3) Click it again to select it and it will download the opensource driver for you.

I just did this myself 2 hours ago.

Thank you both.
I did what greg said before I saw your message marcus, and I think it worked, but I was a little nervous removing everything which had Nvidia in the title.
I will try your method too.

Many thanks,

Arthur
