Login screen appearance

Asked by William Pabon

I want to change the login screen appearance from the the default. There are quite a few on:
http://art.gnome.org/themes/gdm_greeter?page=1.

I downloaded some of those (.tar.gz file) but I don't know what else to do to install them. I tried using System | Preferences | Appearance and pressing the install button, but when I try to open the file with this procedure I get an error message saying something like, ""gdm_mad-tux-2" does not appear to be a valid theme".
Please, help.

All you can really change is the colour of the login box and the wallpaper:

I don't believe the chnaging has been coded in yet as the gnome team are doing other stuff (probably gnome 3). You may find luck with this:

But its a lot of low level editting. Depends how dirty you wanna get your hands. I haven't used it though. I used the first link to simply change the wallpaper.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'm not ready to do this kind of editing myself, yet.
