For your brighness issue, may be your pc suffer of this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/568611 and there is a solution in it...
but first try to use the brightness-applet and tell if it works

on your top menu panel (the one with Applications) right-click, one of the sides, then select "Brightness Applet" try it

hello marcobra, thanx for your suggestion. i tried with the top menu brightness applet. no such message is displayed. well let me elaborate the issue. to adjust brightness i m suppose to get the function by pressing Fn key and Up and Down keys. doing so i get a visual message on the top right showing increase and decrease of brightness as same to volume control, but the actual brightness of the screen remains unchanged. i think there is no driver installed. well according to u, this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/568611, shall i try? how to use it??? please help

Hi guys,

The problem towards my Acer Aspire 5740-core i5, LCD screen brightness got solved. thanks to Kamal Mostafa for his valuable support. All you need is Maverick series of Ubuntu. Then follow the instructions at Kamal Mostafa webpage towards adding PPA. Update properly for Gnome-Power-Manager installation. Reboot. Refer "https://launchpad.net/~kamalmostafa/+archive/linux-kamal-mjgbacklight". Then for adding "acpi_backlight=vendor", refer "https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport/Machines/Netbooks"------ "HotKeys part of Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 Lucid". Follow the commands in terminal. Reboot. See the miracle!!

Thank you
