Ubuntu 10.04 Shutdown Stalls

Asked by Don Senavitis

I had Ubuntu running pretty good but want to use PHP/MySql.
So I started prepping to use an alternate OS boot disk.
I have a drive bay with 4 removable drives.
I keep the drives installed but don't always turn them on (they have individual on/off buttons).
When I turn one on it shows up in places/computer and I can mount no problem.
When I'm finished I try and unmount (doesn't always work) then turn off drive.
Afterwards, when I shutdown the computer it hangs at the splash screen.
If I hit escape I see the following:
init: avahi-daemon main process (1032) terminated with status 255
modem-manager: caught signal 15, shutting down... (Note: I do not use a modem other than Cable Modem)
init: Disconnected from system bus

I'm worried improperly shutting down system will start to affect my removable drives

This might be related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/418509 dealing with the modem-manager hanging at shutdown.

What filesystems are the removable drives? If they are journaled, they may take a little while to unmount.

Drive bay with 4 removable drives 1.5TB ext4 bootable, 1.5TB ext4/NTFS, 1TB ext4
I installed Ubuntu on one of the removable drives and use that Ubuntu when I want to access them.
That way the drives don't need to be mounted/unmounted and I don't risk screwing up my main installation.
This is fine for now, Thanks.
