unknown external hard drive

I have a external hard drive with i think i broken (playing with gparted) i was trying to make it Fat32 now it says its unknown and when i try and format it fails.
Has this error something to do it

unable to detect filesystem! possible reasons are:
The filesystem is damaged
The filesystem is unknown to GParted
There is no file system available unformatted.

Sorry if this is a silly question but i am quite new to this.
