ubuntu automatic updates issue

Asked by Caesarivs

Hi there you guys

I'm very new at Linux world, but I've managed to get my desktop very nice and sweet and every thing is going out smoothly, but...

One day I noticed that GNOME wasn't warning me about updates, I have had an orange star on my upper panel that indicates me that updates were available, but suddenly that star wasn't appearing anymore, so I went to System > Administration > Software Sources, at the updates tab, the check box "Check for updates" under Automatic Updates was unchecked, so I checked it to have my Ubuntu to warn me about updates again, but when I close Software sources window I re-open it again but the check box is again unchecked... I managed to update through console with a simple:

sudo aptitude update

sudo aptitude upgrade

but I don't have the automatic check for updates, and I have to do that manually, and I would like my PC to check for updates every day and download them automatically... so any help would be so so so much appreciated... thanks for reading me, see ya!

try opening the synaptic package manager. At the top, click 'Settings', then 'Preferences', there might be some stuff in there that could help.

Hello,

try to press Alt+F2 and then type sudo /usr/bin/update-manager then the update manager should start. If nothing happens open a terminal and execute the command in the terminal. If something went wrong you will see a error message. Please post the message here.

Hi,

Here's what I got in the terminal:

xcesarfrancox@matute:~$ sudo /usr/bin/update-manager
Password:
warning: could not initiate dbus
current dist not found in meta-release file
could not send the dbus Inhibit signal: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

The update manager started but told me that I had to update manually... :(

What can I do? Is there a problem with dbus??

Damn! I guess things are getting worse now...

I suspected there was some kind of problem with dbus, so I went to services under System > Administration, and tried to deactivate and reactivate dbus service by unchecking - checking it... but I think it was very foolish, cause my desktop freezed, I reseted my PC and when I logged in again, everything is like normal, but I get this error Message:

Internal Error

failed to initialize HAL!

so I tried to rerun dbus service again and when I try to open services under System > Administration, I got this another error message:

Configuration could not be loaded

You can't access to the system configuration.

What can I do??

Hi, I figured out how to turn on dbus again typing at terminal

sudo /etc/init.d/dbus start

but now I'm back at the original problem, the update-notifier, even the update-manager aren't able to update by their own...

Guys, I have the exact same problem and ZERO desire to make a fresh install.
What could be the fix?
