My laptop with Ubuntu Lucid Lynx keeps shutting down randomly

Asked by manoj

I have a sony vaio laptop (VGN CR343N) with the following config: HDD 180gb, 3 gb RAM, intel core2duo 1.80 ghz. I have installed Ubuntu Lucid Lynx by completely removing the pre-installed windows vista. Every thing works ok, except the camera and fingerprint reader...but that is not an issue for me because i didn't use them much earlier.

My problem is that the system suddenly shuts down without any warning.. i do not know what to do, i have done memory tests and those were okay..no problems..

please help me, where to look for logs, as i am new to ubuntu.. i guess their must be logs somewhere to submit more details of this problem..

i think this should not be a hardware issue.

pls help.

thanks

Ok this sounds similar to a problem I had after upgrading to 10.04. You can check logs in the Administration menu by opening "Log File Viewer" the log which will show any errors if any will be the syslog.1 which is near the bottom of the list of logs. Each message will be time and date coded so try to find the time closest to when your system crashed. I would imagine that the error is in relation to either the graphics driver or pulse audio but I wouldn't want to try any fixes until we are sure what is causing the problem.

Hope this helps

Howdy :)

In your logs you posted above, it says " mindborne-laptop kernel: [ 6501.666407] Critical temperature reached (107 C), shutting down.".

Which means your laptop overheated, and it shut down to prevent any damage to your hardware! That stinks!

Now, is your fan on your laptop spinning? If not, you will need a new one.

Also, I would get a temperature monitor. I use xsensors. Install it by going to the terminal and type in <sudo apt-get install xsensors> without the <>.

Then to see your temperature, just open up a terminal and type in <sensors> again without the <>.

Hope this helped!

Thanks Allen

I would look into your suggestions..

I don't know how this overheating happened, but i ll check for the fan.. and post the feedbacks..

thanks again.

Did you end up needing a new fan?

Hi Allen

i was on a vacation, so replying late.. actually the fan was okay, but i ended up checking with the sony service center, and they told its some sort of motherboard error.. this meant that the entire motherboard to be replaced..costing me enough bucks to purchase a new desktop !!

so i have dumped that vaio and use its hdd for storage.. i m using my desktop with ubuntu and its running wonderful..

thanks..
