I require to autostart programs minimised

Asked by Neale

I can Autostart programs by going SYSTEM/PREFERENCES/SESSIONS & configuring them via STARTUP PROGRAMS tab.
However I cannot find a way to make these Autostarted programs to start in the system tray or minimised.

QUESTION WITHDRAWN "UBUNTU" ERASED FROM SYSTEMS BECAUSE IT WILL NOT MEET OUR REQUIREMENTS. WE HAVE BEEN FORCED TO RETURN TO "WINDOWS XP". THANK YOU FOR LOOKING.

Standard session applications work in background. They don't have any GUI (Graphical User Interface), so they can't be minimized. Some applications (such as the network manager) start in the system tray automatically. You can't see other applications.

I guess he wants for example aMSN or XChat to start automatically, but be minimized.

I don't know if there is a way of doing this in gnome, but my guess is that if the application has the possibility to do this you should take a look into the application's preferences.

It may vary from one program to the next, but I know how to tell. Go to terminal, type in the name of the program you want hidden and then type --help. It will show the flag to start hidden.

For example:
Basket (notes program) -
-h, --start-hidden Hide the main window in the system tray icon on startup
So your command is basket -h

Firestarter -
--start-hidden Start Firestarter with the GUI not visible
So your command is firestarter --start-hidden

I have encountered this same issue.

Seemingly CCSM or the startup manager do not provide any option to force minmization or background startup on GUI programs.

In my case, I am trying to force the RemoteDroidServer.jar to start minimized without luck.

KDE provides an extensive array of window management options... it'S a shame we (gnome/vanilla ubuntu users) have no such easy way to manage such things....

I also find it quite irrational not to have ALL options provided within the CCSM window management module, meaning: Maximized is provided, why not Minimized. Fullscreen/Background, etc.
