After 10.04 update, can't log in.

Asked by Jeffrey A. Knichel

The update manager asked if I wanted to update to 10.04, so I did. Now I can't log in. The first time I tried, it went to the desktop but there were no icons at all. I finally restarted the computer. Now when I log in it tries to load, flashes to a black screen with code, then back to the log in screen. I finally saw where you could log in in safe mode, and that worked and I am using the computer.
I am not a computer science person and don't know anything about programming. Used Ubuntu 9 for a couple of years now and liked it a lot, and never had a problem.
What do I do?

The next time I booted the computer I booted in recovery mode. This ran for a while and then I had to manually push the power button on the computer until it went off. I then booted again and everything seems to work fine now.?????? So I guess the question is resolved.

The computer seems to be working normally now, so I guess the problem is solved. (see my comment)
