Cannot install from either USB or CD drive. says "can not mount /dev/loop0" at startup boot sequence. Please help?

Asked by Jason Winston

I have the Ubuntu 10.04 i386 ISO file on a Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit laptop. 2G RAM and 2G Intel CPU

I have burned the ISO to a 4.7 GIG DVD-RW, a 700 mb CD-RW, a 700 CD-R, and a 2 Gig USB drive.

So I press ESC at startup to go to the booting thingy, and then I select the DVD drive if I'm using a Disc and the USB name (Kingston) when I use the USB to boot.

btw, I have used the Universal USB Installer and burned the ISO to my USB too.

the problem is, when I try to install Ubuntu, it would go through a bunch of command prompt weird coding stuff, show me an Ubuntu loading screen with "Ubuntu" written in the middle and 5 dots beneath it. The loading would get to the second dot before going back to the command prompt and show this message:

(initramfs) can not mount /dev/loop0 on (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs)

it says that it's an input/output error.

I don't understand what's going on!

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you burn the image as SLOWLY as you were allowed?
Did you check the CD for defects once initially booted to?

how do you "MD5" test something?

and I don't think it's an issue with the disks or anything because I used like 3 different disks. I also used a USB drive to boot Ubuntu and install but it stilled showed me the can not mount blah blah blah message.

Te disks don't mean anything. You have downloaded a massive piece of data sensitive data and failed to test it for consistancy and completeness. Don't worry, must ignorant windows users assume that just because the browser said the download was finished, that everything is "okay". This is most likely why you are getting the issues so using the same image file will definately make a bad install if it is bad.

You could have also shown some initiative by websearching for solutions based on my comment instead of wanting handholding. You can use this guide to test the image. If it is good then we can continue:

ok so it told me that the md5sums were different when I clicked compare.

I'm gonna try redownloading the iso.

If the MD5 sum fails, don't burn the iso. Torrents help downloads as well as giving bandwidth to users as you ten become a seed.

jeez. I downloaded the 10.04 ubuntu i386 iso from the official site again and from a different network ip (at a public library) and it still tells me that the md5 sums were different.

I'm gonna try a torrent and see what happens. don't think a library lets you torrent anything though.

Use this torrent:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/ubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-i386.iso.torrent

If they have a torrent client it can be used. Torrents are not by nature illegal and they have great legal uses like the link above.

The first image shows the right code:

andy@D420:~$ md5sum ubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-i386.iso
9a95ed6f6ec38fb58c446dba1add6a08 ubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-i386.iso

The windows image burner SUCKS. I suggest you use one of these: http://www.pchell.com/support/cdburner.shtml

OR

If you have a spare (at least) 1Gb USB stick you can make a bootable USB stick (or SD card) and install faster using that:

The torrent is made by Canonical and is seeded by the other Ubuntu users so will be FAST. Glad you got the gold
