Cannot change password in lucid

Asked by MichaelB

Hi,

I have a problem to change the password of the main user in lucid x64.

When i use the users/groups interface or about me, i insert my current password, the new one and submit.. The cursor
still loading and nothing happens and i can't close the window...

I test in some other computer with the same version of Ubuntu (10.04 / x64) and it work.. This is a basic install with updates.

I tried many times with different password and it always hang..

Any ideas ?

Can i try to reinstall some package ?

Thanks in advance,
Michael

Try to change it in recovery mode.

After successful change, update the system.

Did you change anything, e.g. permissions, sudoers?
Or did you run a normal user app as root?

When it's just a GUI issue you could report a bug.

Diagnose log files, e.g. syslog, auth.log

.xsession-errors (hidden in /home/user).

I can change my password in recovery mode but with the graphical interface it still fail when i try to change it (nothing happens, cursor still loading)..

It's only bizzare when there was no diagnose. Maybe gnome-keyring, policykit, dbus or whatever had a hiccup.
One user had the issue because he added a second keyring and made it default instead of login-keyring. The annoyance actually was, it should at least output some helpful message instead of just a waiting cursor.
Reporting bugs is an attempt to make Ubuntu better, so if you can reproduce the issue see it as contribution.

I always opened a bug when i found a new one, but in this case i saw nothing in log files, no message, etc.. just a waiting cursor..
Is why i ask there before. I will see if this problem happen again in the futur.

Thanks for your help :o)
