No hard drive?

Asked by Bennett

Im brand new to Ubuntu or Linux for that matter. Just installed 7.04 and I cant find my hard drive. It is not displayed in the computer - file browser section. What I do see is my floppy and DVD drives and "filesystem." Durring installation Ubuntu found my hard drive and I installed the OS on there. I have a SATA 250 Gig HD. I cant find anything in the forums to address this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What exactly are you looking for? Filesystem is the contents of the Ubuntu
install and the hard drive (or partition) it's on. Open it and you can see
all the files that where installed. One special folder is called Home. That
is where you will store all your personal (i.e. not system) files. Are you
looking for something else?

In *NIX systems there are no C: and D: as in Windows.
Partitions are (generally) listed in /media. In your case, sda1 is your first partition in the first disk, sda2 the second partition, sdb1 the first partition on the second disk, ...

Is that how your hard drives are represented, with "filesystem? Im looking to see my actual hard drive, it dosent show up in the file browser (when you go to Places, Computer).

I want to start creating folders to add my dig pics to the hd. I cannot create any new folders because when I right click on the background in filesystem, "create folder" is greyed out.

The only place you want to add anything is the "home" folder. Open it from Places - Home Folder. There you can create new folders or save anything you want. All the folders in the "filesystem" with the exception of Home are system folders and you definitely do not want to mess with them. It's best to just forget they are there. If you need to make some system changes you may get directions telling you do edit one of those files and this is fine, but otherwise ignore them.

The home folder is part of the hard drive. Kind of like my documents in windows.
