ubuntu installation crashes on Emachines

I have installed Ubuntu Feisty on about 15 Computers and never had a problem. However, my friend has an Emachines computer and the install crashes every time. I get no error messages, the computer just dies. As the problem happens after Grub is installed the computer is rendered useles. I have tried an alternative distro ( Freespire) and it installed; but my friend desparately wants Ubuntu, (can you blame him!!?) Any ideas

Try to install Ubuntu Alternate instead of Ubuntu Desktop.
