Upgrade 6.06 to next stable version

Asked by apeddy

I keep Napper up to date but find the 18 month cycle between stable versions attractive. Will I have a one step upgrade to next stable version in ? October

The next stable version to Dapper is Edgy, that is out of support. You can try to install Feisty (the last release) using apt, but it can be dangerous. I suggest you to make a backup of all your data and download the Feisty CD from ubuntu.com.

Thankyou for prompt response. I used the wrong word "stable". One of the reasons I installed Dapper was long term support and I conscientously use that support and keep it up to date. Even if I do keep it up to date is it unsafe to upgrade at end of support cycle with "alternative" CD?

I don't think it's officially considered unsafe. You want to back up data anyway.

You will be able to upgrade to the next LTS release when it comes out. It's going to be 8.04, so if I were you I would wait for it.
(8.04 = 4th month of 2008)

The Alternate CD is merely a text based installer of Ubuntu. It's basically a backup way to install Ubuntu if you run into problems that you can't seem to solve.

If you want to upgrade Ubuntu, you have to do so one release at a time. So if you are running 6.06 and want 7.04, you need to first upgrade to 6.10 and then 7.04 and then 7.10.
