Install over network without internet?

Asked by Brendan Leo

I have a point of sale terminal with a 10GB hard drive. It has a touchscreen powered by a 3M chipset, and has no CD drive, but has a floppy drive. Is it possible to install Ubuntu over a network without using an internet connection, as I am running on 256kb ADSL. I have Ubuntu installation discs, can I use these? I also need the touchscreen to work. I know that Ubuntu has build in support for touchscreens, but do I need to configure it in any way?

Thanks for your help!

If you have another computer with ubuntu, and you network card support PXE boot, this link may interest you :

This would work, and I have tried that. However, the network card I am using is based on a Realtek 8319 Chipset, and does not support PXE boot. I have tried to get around this by using www.rom-o-matic.net and creating a boot disc, which works, but then says that it could find no file or directory. Any ideas?

Hello Brendan,

Sorry, never tried this myself, so this is kind of enemy territory for me, but can't you use a floppy with etherboot for that, like it's described in method 2 at http://www.ubuntugeek.com/install-ubuntukubuntuedubuntuxubuntu-without-cdrom-drive.html ?

Can you help with this problem?
