[Tribe 5] desktop won't load on linux 2.6.22-10

Asked by Alex Mayorga

After updating to kernel 2.6.22-10 gnome-desktop won't load anymore.

When I log into gdm the desktop tries to load and then crashes back to gdm, I get to see the panels up and down for a couple of seconds, but then the screen goes blank and throws me back into gdm.

Tiny red bars show when I press the power button and work like a progress bar of sorts while shutting down.

This is an AMD Turion 64 X2 based laptop and the model is Dell Inspiron 1501.

Thanks in advance.

Can you give us ~/.xsession-errors file, please.

Can you use failsafe mode?

Typing one or all of those command do you see errors or does they resolve your problems?
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get check

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade got me a newer version of xorg so I'm rebooting to see if that fixes this, I'm pasting here the version info in case this one was a bug.

I see you're using Gutsy. Do you know that it is unstable?
Does the new version of xorg works?
If not, try to run this command and reboot:
mv ~/.gnome2/session ~/.gnome2/session.old

Andrea,

I know that Gutsy is unstable. But I've heard that it's a good policy to post a question before filing the bug.

If I use fglrx, by enabling the restricted ATI driver the desktop seem to loads just fine.

I'm disabling it and rebooting to see if the problem goes away with the latest xorg update.

Andrea,

~/.gnome2/session doesn't exists on my system and I've confirmed that this is still not working with the free drivers, but works just fine with fglrx.

Thanks in advance,
Alex

Andrea,

Thanks on all your guidance. This is not solved, but I've found a workaround for it. Maybe you'd like to subscribe to the attached bug and share your expertise there.

Thanks again on all your help.

Best regards,
Alex
