printing over a network

Asked by Brad Ganson

downloaded and installed hp's linux install file for its 5610 all in one printer. it's there allright but cannot print over the network. it" attached to another computer (my desktop) and test page will not work.
One other thing...
downloaded and installed realtek's wireless software for ubuntu. it doesn't work either.
does anything work with linux or is this all just smoke and mirrors.

i am not dumb...successfully programmed ms-dos in assembly langauge and compiled a bunch of programs.

Sure some of the commands are the same...dir, etc.
but this linux is rediculous

One other thing. After clicking on print a test page the printer hangs and I have to turn off desktop where the printer is connected to or nothing else will be printed.

By the way...after 4 tries at installing a wireless driver from realtek (with their instructions) it apparently works. Using it now . working wireless at the moment. I do not believe any of this.

Now I've had to reinstall a printer driver just to eliminate whaT UBUNTU has done trying to send a test page to network computer printer. Does anyone at Ubuntu know what they are doing?

Printer:

make sure you have the package hplip-gui installed (from software center). It should be automatically recognised if it is connected and reachable over the network. If it is installed on another pc you have to share it through that pc.

Network driver (realtek):
Nice to see you made it work. Anyway, if you don't mention the ubuntu version nor the exact version number of the device nobody will be able to give you more help. (Apart from that it's hard to blame ubuntu/linux/... for the fact that realtek doesn't provide drivers or good developer documentation for its devices)
As a rule though it is usually better to check for information on the ubuntu site than on the manufacturer site.
