only failsafe GNOME works, why doesnt GNOME?

Asked by Jeremy Neil

ok, im fairly new to ubuntu and i have just installed 10.04 on my desktop. before ubuntu i had xp pro and it had a virus but anyways. theres alot i dont understand with linux and so far its been really frustrating to me to figure out how everthing works. so far i havent been able to install new apps from the ubuntu software center because the install button doesnt seem to work. I also cant unlock the use for changing the login screen settings or whatever its called. ive used ubuntu before for short period of time about 6 years or so ago and had basically the same problems. i aslo dont seem to have file manager either in the list for preferences. installation was done by myself and by my means of dowloading from the ubuntu site and by cd which there seems to be no problem with the copies i made, which i tried installing several times. i also get an error message after installing and on boot saying unknown command "terminal" so yeah thats about all whats wrong that ive noticed so far. thanks on a response ^_^. i have been using windows since before dsl was availible, though im not a programmer, mostly an average-intermediate user.

oh and the error after installing is after the computer restarts with the cd still in and it ejects it with a long list of some error. i dont remember what it says though after teh cd was ejected i hit enter and it restarted again i believe

Ok Jeremy try to download Ubuntu 10.04 LTS again from Internet (or borrow the cd/dvd from your friends) and write into cd/dvd once again. And format the Ubuntu drive with latest file system (like EXT4 J.)

After successfully installation of OS, login into your Ubuntu OS open the terminal (Application -> Accessories -> Terminal);

Type this...

sudo passwd root

enter your password---once again type your passwd

So use this password when ever system will popup (FROM 'ROOT' YOU CAN USE IT AS YOU WANT)

Best of Luck
Bye

well that would be great if one of my friends used linux but i dont know anyone that does. when i tried the third time of installation i redownloaded ubuntu and made a new copy and used the iso image burning instruction from the ubuntu website. not only am i out of discs but i dont think its going to work if it didnt work with a "proper" procedure of doing this. is there anyway i can install without the need of a cd and or usb, perhaps installing directly with the iso file? if it hasnt worked with teh 2 copies of a cd made then i dotn know what will.. that and i dont have a flash drive that is 2gb.

i also ran the disc check to see if there where errors on the disc and seemed to be fine. though i dont know if it checks via teh internet or not. if i have to i'll wait till im shipped an authentic copy of ubuntu 10.04 but if i can fix this without waiting a month that would be great as i really want a fully functioning computer. i'd really like to use linux but so far im leaning back to windows since it is much less of a hassle. oh yeah forgot to mention. my cpu is a pentium 3 at 900 or so mhz, 512mb of ram ddr(probably old), not sure on graphics but its just as low. so perhaps my computer cant run ubuntu.. if theres a btter os of linux for my computer then perhaps i'll switch. sorry i didnt mention this earlier

since the computer is old you can assume that i only have a cd drive. also a floppy drive one usb port which is 1.0(yea, i know, but teh computer was free so...). xp pro ran faster on my computer btw as well. i dont know if the sound card would have anything to do with it either since it works properly. but its a SB live creative card or somethin, believe it came from a dell. dont know what my ethernet card is either but yeah if i need any other info i guess i'll give it

Don't log on as root. it's REALLY REALLY DUMB. Doing so will mean launching web browsers and chat clients as root as well which is a REALLY big security hole.

If a user running the system as user gets attacked by a malicious script in a javascript or some malicious flash code will have only user access. Morons logging on as root will give these scripts FULL system access and they can install packages at will and edit / delete / create data and such.THE UBUNTU COMMUNITY DOES NOT SUPPORT ROOT LOGONS!

If you boot to root recovery mode (hold shift at boot, select recovery mode then scroll sown to roo), you can now run:

cd /home/foo; rm -r ./.*

You will need to replace foo with your username you setup when you installed the OS. E.g:

cd /home/andy; rm -r ./.*; cp /root/.bashrc .; chown foo:foo ./.bashrc

Then you can reboot with:

shutdown -r now

Then login as foo. You will get a vanilla desktop but it should work

You don't need to reinstall at all, you just needed to get new config folders from the skeleton config and you will be fine.

the word is 'the' not 'teh'. I think you are typing faster than your fingers ;)

What was the magic bullet?

There are native games as well as wine which will run SOME games. Happy hunting
