Music Files Won't Play

Asked by Tyler Petresky

Hello! I'm using Ubuntu: Lucid Lynx for whenever I do programming. I like to listen to music while I program, but my music files won't play in my Linux. I've tried tweaking settings and everything, but whenever I play a music file the only thing that comes out of my headphones is a static noise. This static noise happens for almost every noise on the computer. Whenever I get a Skype notification, Skype calls, voice chats, login notifications, etc.

Please help!

I forgot to mention: It's not my hardware. Everything works fine on my Windows 7.

What windows does or doesn't do is of no value. It is a different OS with different support.

Have you installed ubuntu-restricted-extras?

Have you installed w32codecs from the medibuntu repo?

Do any sounds work?

If it wasn't in the OS install package and it's not Skype or Code::Blocks, then I haven't installed it. Where do I find these? The Ubuntu boot up jingle works fine. (kinda catchy if I do say so. haha). That's the only sound that I've heard work.

Just run:

sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update; sudo apt-get install gnome-mplayer vlc

Should install a truckload of codecs for nearly any format. It will also install java and flash for you.

If you still have audio issues then, then we can move on to more technical things.

THANKS!! My music is running perfectly fine now! :) I'll be sure to report any more audio problems. This support forum is soo awesome! The user know exactly what they are doing!

Do you mind if I ask how you know how to do this stuff?

Just use the OS. While you were all getting excited about XP most of us were getting excited about other stuff. Most users install ubuntu-restricted-extras as a matter of course so they can play MP3s etc. The default install comes ONLY with open codecs so as to traverse international laws without hinderance but the metapackage allows easy installation of most codecs. I just threw in vlc and gnome-mplayer as they pull in one or two little extras.

Just use the OS is the very short answer. If you've used Linux (in any form) then you become more accustomed to it just as you have probably used windows for a great many years and know it's ins and outs, you will learn linux the same way, you're just behind some of us just as I am behind some of them. You'll see.

Alright! Considering I'm only 14, I think I'm doing pretty darn good. Haha! Thanks! I really appreciate it.

Uh-oh! Whenever I do certain tasks on here. The music that I'm listening to goes back to static. When I shutdown the music program (RhythmBox) and then bring it back up, the music works fine. Then I do another one of those "special tasks" and the process repeats itself.

Sounds like a bug, try a different player. As George Foreman says:

"Keep punching kid"

:D
