Cannot Install Ubuntu 8.04, 8.10, 9.10, 10.04 (installation hangs after a while)

Asked by CJ Smal

Hi
I am fairly computer literate. My PC has the following specs: AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+ 2.00GHz, 1 Gig Ram.
I have tried to install all the version from 8.04 and onwards with no avail. I have also tried the alternate installer as well with no luck. Also I cannot get it to run on the LiveCD.

It boots up but soon after I get a black screen with cursor(white vertical line) flashing in the top left corner. It stays on this screen for a couple of minutes and only then do I get a screen that says "Ubuntu" with the 5 "loading" dots below that. It hangs on this screen, if I press the ESC button, I see the following messages: /init: Line 7: can't open /dev/sr1: No medium found. the sr1 bit changes the whole time.

I've been wanting to start using Ubuntu Linux since forever but have not bee able to get it to install.
Please help me? I have very little knowledge of Ubuntu Linux.

Make sure you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded as well as burn the CD as SLOWLY as you can and once booted to, check the CD for defects (Press space on the stickman screen to get the usual boot menu in Lucid).

"Line 7: can't open /dev/sr1" : sr1 is probably CD reader (usually, it's named sr0, but perhaps you have both a CD writer and a DVD reader).

Likewise, disabling the floppy drive worked. I think its because this error is followed by a stream of

Do you have a Floppy Disk ?

@actionparsnip: I don't think the CD I am using is defective, as mentioned already in my question header. I have had this issue with more than one version.

@delance: I do not have a Floppy Disk no, I do however have a normal CD Rom and a DVD writer as we on my PC. The error message was also showing the sr0 error in the string of messages I got. Do you think I should try and install it via a USB flash disk.

Not sure it will work, but yes: install it via a USB flash disk.

@delance: Well I kinda gave up, tried the USB installation without avail. Do you have any other ideas I can try?

Also Is it not my graphics card causing the problem I have a Nvidia GeForce 6600GT?

@actionparsnip where do I type that in?

I don't know if this will help but I have a Chaintech Zenith VNF4 Ultra Motherboard. Maybe there is known issues with either this MB or my Graphics Card.

When you try to boot on Live CD, what happens exactly ?

The boot-up "hangs" before the Language screen appears. Well I get to the screen that says "Ubuntu" with the 5 "loading" dots below that. I do not get pass that screen.

You are locked in "upstart" phase, when Linux kernel launches all backgrounds tasks (daemon) and some hardware driver. This "five dots" screen is pretty, but hide all interesting messages.
1) Boot on CD
2) Go to "Try but don't install" (we will do later a hardware check)
3) On bottom, you see a long line. This contains boot options. With left and right arrow keys, go on text "quiet splash" and remove it. It will remove "five dots" screen, and you will be able to see progress (and perhaps error) messages. If someone, in this forum, ask you to add option, it can be done with F6 key, which open a menu
4) Boot
5) If boot succeed (this boot use less graphic functionality that disk boot, and can work else when disk boot fails), go on Administration->System->Check Hardware and have a look at graphic tests (and the others if you want).

Ok just another thing, should I not maybe try to install the AMD64 version instead of the Intel X86 version which I have been trying to install this whole time.

I just realised that now.

Run "Administration->System->Check Hardware" on 64bits version, so you will have a good idea how this version support your hardware. But I think 64bits version is of few interest if you have less than 3GB of memory.

If I remember, the "try but don't install" is before the "5 dots loading screen".
The messages you see means "init" process doesn't find the third, fourth, ...6th internal disks, but I presume you have less than 3 internal drivers, so there are not error messages.
Please refer to my message of 2010-09-02

thanks for the reply, I have looked specifically for the "try but don't install" option (Ubuntu 10.04). I just get to the loading screen. I do not get past this stage...

I'm not currently at my Ubuntu computer, but at a Windows computer, so I can't check.
At start, you should have a menu like:

Install
Try but don't install
Check memory
Boot from disk

and a line of text at bottom

In order to see those options you have to press 'Enter' during boot up when you see the purple screen with 2 icons at the bottom.
I then pressed 'F6' to get a small menu screen pop up, pressed 'Esc' to get rid of that menu. Then only did I saw the command from which I removed the "quiet splash" from.

Booting up now will give feedback on what error messages I get.

I think that when X11 try to open Login window, it failed to use graphic card, but if you don't be able to go in a session, I'm not expert enough to help you.
