Mouse clicker stops working for a short time

Asked by Scott Price

After running KlamAV, finding malware and deleting the infected files, I uninstalled ClamAV and all associated files to tried to reinstall it fresh. Now my mouse clicker will stop working for a short time out of the blue (only the clickers), and I am unable to run update on anything, getting this error:

Extracting templates from packages: 100%
Preconfiguring packages ...
dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting:
syntax error: unknown user 'clamav' in statoverride file
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)
A package failed to install. Trying to recover:

I am also running Windows 7 with dual boot, networked with another dual boot Ubuntu/XP, and the mouse problem is on both machines, one mouse is wireless and the other is USB. The mouse problem is happening in both Ubuntu and Windows.

Has anyone ever heard of such a problem?

Thanks very much.

Update: Now when the clicker stops in Ubuntu, it does not start again at all. I am unable to use Ubuntu at all now. Is there ANYONE that can help me with this?

I Googled "statoverride" and found another similar problem that was fixed by going to /var/lib/dpkg/ and editing the statoverride file (as root), taking out any lines that referred to "clamtk". You have to make sure that there are no empty lines, or you'll get the same fatal error, but with "empty line" as the error.
