my computer keeps rebooting

my computer keeps adding generic. recovery modes, i now have 8, how do i get back to just having 2, as when i first down loaded

Use System | Administration | Synaptic Package Manager and do a quick search for: linux-image. You should find quite a few green boxes (installed). Check for removal on the older ones you don't want, but leave at least the last two recent ones as a backup kernel is always a good idea. Then click on the green apply button to remove the ones you've chosen.

This is the safest way as you don't want to mess up configurations particularly as your computer boots up. Let Synaptic Package Manager figure those issues out for you.
