Ubuntu 10.04 won't install with 1g. RAM

Asked by wordsmyth2

My daughter has been running Ubuntu 9.10 successfully on her Toshiba laptop with 1g of RAM, but I'm unable to install 10.04 on the same machine - the installation gets as far as loading the program (the four red dots on screen) and then freezes. Have tried several times, from CD and USB, without success. 10.04 installed easily on my machine which has 4g of RAM, so what is the problem with only having 1g - according to the requirements, this should be enough ...

To get better help please give us the complete brand and model of Toshiba laptop...

Then to not waste time trying to install from a not good install cd, BE SURE to have made your Ubuntu live install cd from an MD5sum verified Ubuntu iso image.

It's a Toshiba Satellite 1110. At present it and my daughter a some distance from me, but I can check out more if required...I used the same CD to load Ubuntu 10.04 which went smoothly. Out of curiousity, I also tried loading Mint 9 on the Satellite - same result. But it also would load okay on my machine - a Dell Ispiron PP41L....

I installed with no problem Ubuntu on 256GB virtual machine, so you have largely enough space.
To MD5 disk:
   https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
Did you freeze before having choice between "Try with no installation" and "Ubuntu installation" ?

No. The installation menu came up, I clicked INSTALL, the loading logo came up - the four moving red dots - and then: a blank screen on freeze. It progressed no further. No activity there an hour later, so I switched off...
