I loaded 10.04 and system stops after Ubuntu logo flashes on sceen

I down loaded Ubuntu 10.04 and the system freezed on me at the cleaning point. So, I rebooted and now I can't get back to the desk top . The system stops after the Ubuntu log flashes on the sceen. I am running on an IBM R-51 with 512MB of Ram, and 40Gigs of harddrive space. CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW TO GET BACK TO MY DESK TOP

I have not tried the solution I was sent as of yet. I will respond within a few days to comment on the repose to my problem.

Same here. Just the initial screen with the scrolling dots underneath.

Bringing up the DOS screen (Esc) gives -

Mountall: event failed
init: dbus pre-start process (1071) terminated with status 2
